Thanks for stopping by.
This site exists for a simple reason: I write essays, and I wanted a place where they could live honestly, without much fuss. Over the years, writing has become a way for me to make sense of ordinary life—family stories, work and retirement, food and memory, love, loss, and the small moments that tend to matter more the longer you live with them.
Some readers may arrive here through Silly: Stories in Ordinary Time, my debut essay collection. That book reflects a particular season of my life when I first began to write seriously. This site, by contrast, is meant to be ongoing. A workbench. A place to try things out.
In this section, you’ll find new writing—sometimes polished, sometimes still finding its footing. From time to time, I plan to share early versions of essays in progress, pieces that may eventually find their way into future books. Think of this as an open door rather than a finished gallery.
I don’t write quickly, and I don’t write to chase trends. I’m more interested in clarity than cleverness, warmth over sharpness, and telling the truth as best I can about the lives we’re all already living. If you enjoy essays that linger, that notice details, and that occasionally laugh at themselves, you’re very much in the right place.
Make yourself comfortable. Read what you like. If you do like something you read, please spread the word to your friends.
If you don’t like it, well… tell your enemies.
They probably have it coming anyway.
